Over 40 super-fans crowded the back lot of Elliott Hall of Music in hopes of catching a glimpse or scoring an autograph from one of country music’s elite after an extremely well received show Saturday night.
Fans danced and sang along as Gary Allan and Darius Rucker exposed students and locals to a live, three-hour performance of their unique blend of country music and rock ’n’ roll.
“You could tell that the singers were getting a good vibe from the whole crowd,” said Jon Quigley, junior in the College of Technology. He explained that a combination of a large, fun-loving crowd, and the array of familiar songs performed by both artists contributed to the overall appeal of the night.
Other fans were moved by the sheer musical talent of both artists.
“The entire time Gary Allan was jamming on his guitar was the highlight of the show, and when he sang the Tom Petty cover I was completely blown away,” said Jared Armstrong, a junior in the College of Technology. “I had no idea he could sing like that.”
Armstrong said what draws people to Allan and Rucker’s style of music is the way they mix country and rock music.
“The bottom line is that both artists have country in their voices but their instrumentals definitely have more of a rock style,” said Armstrong. “Both Gary and Darius sound different than how most people tend to stereotype country (music).” He said that by crossing into the rock genre these two artists have contributed to helping country music into the mainstream and bringing more likable music to a lot more potential listeners.
Fans were excited that after last year’s Dierks Bentley concert, Purdue acquired another top country act for the second year in a row.
“(Elliott Hall) is a great place for country acts too because of all the students and people around the Lafayette area,” said Quigley. “It is small enough to have an intimate show but big enough to house a big–time act.”
After Saturday’s show, Quigley now plans to see another Darius Rucker show when he tours this summer.
“I have seen a lot of country shows over the years, but this was the first time at Elliott (Hall) and it has totally gotten me ready for summertime,” said Quigley. “I can’t wait to see who will be touring, and as of now, I’m officially ready to buy an excessive amount of tickets and see as many shows as possible.”
