A replacement was named Thursday for West Lafayette City Councilor Paul Roales, who is moving from the city district he represented on the council.

Roales’ replacement, appointed by Tippecanoe County Democratic Party Chairwoman Heather Maddox, is Jon Hoggatt.

Hoggatt, a 2005 Purdue graduate, is the secretary of the West Lafayette Police Merit Commission and attends the Indiana University School of Medicine Indianapolis.

The Democrat Paul Roales moved out of City District 1 and into State House District 26. He said there is no overlap between the two districts. Roales plans on running for the District 26 State Representative seat in November 2010.

According to Roales’ resignation letter to the council: “I have greatly enjoyed the opportunity to serve the community of West Lafayette. ... I challenge the mayor, City Council and our hard-working department heads and employees to not rest satisfied with the status quo as sufficient, but to instead continually push for forward progress.”

Hoggatt said he is in good spirits having been chosen to serve on the council.

“I’m just excited to hit the ground running and start serving District 1,” he said.

Roales said he thinks Hoggatt is a good choice for the city council.

“Jon is a great candidate – very involved in the Purdue community,” Roales said. “Very aware of student issues.”
