The men’s and women’s cross country teams gained a lot of experience this weekend at the Big Ten Championships.
Coach Jack Warner was pleased with both teams’ performances.
“(Freshman) Camille (Buscomb) ran a great race and had one of our top women’s showings in recent history,” Warner said. “She’s going to do great things in our program and in the Big Ten, and we’re excited to watch her continue to succeed in the future.”
The women’s team finished ninth overall thanks to personal bests from every runner.
Buscomb finished 17th overall with a time of 21:17. Senior Kristin Phillips finished 35th overall, in 21:39. A pair of sophomores finished next, with Katie Conrad in 46th place, running a 22:07, and Stephanie Bonk finishing 48th, with a time of 22:09. Senior Sarah Klaczynski finished 58th, with a time of 22:25. Freshman Kelly McCurdy finished 59th, with a time of 22:24. Sophomore Kara Conflenti came 66th, with a time of 22:36.
On the men’s side, Warner saw the team improve its overall score from last year, finishing 10th.
“Both squads made great strides, improving team scores from last year, but we’ve still got a ways to go,” Warner said. “These are two young teams for us, and today’s experience and efforts will definitely come into play in the future.”
Junior Caden Shields finished 35th, with a time of 26:28.8. Sophomore Cale Allen finished 52nd, with a time of 26:59.7. Freshman Stephen Schulz ran a 27:35.2 and finished in 63rd place. Right behind him in 64th place was sophomore Ladd Mercer, with a time of 27:35.2. In 65th place was freshman Rob Stewart, with a time of 27.35.4. Sophomore Charles White finished 68th, with a time of 27:58.9, while fellow sophomore Dominic DeSantis finished 69th, with a time of 28:00.3.
The men’s and women’s teams will race next at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship at 11 a.m. Nov. 14th, in Bloomington, Ind.
