A jazz legend will visit Purdue on Saturday and will perform the same jazz that brought together audiences more than 60 years ago.
Dave Brubeck, an 88-year-old master of his craft, will perform his biggest hit “Take Five,” as well as many others, to a sold-out crowd in Loeb Playhouse.
The show, which begins at 8 p.m., has attracted fans from all over the area.
“I first learned about Dave and his music in my jazz history class,” said Nick Tucker, a senior at the University of Indianapolis. “For serious musicians and jazz fans like myself, it is really easy to see his influence on all types of music, as well as the complexity of the music he has created.”
Tucker said he is majoring in music performance, and jazz is very popular amongst his peers as well.
“I am coming up with a bunch of friends from school because it is a rare chance to see an icon like this,” Tucker said. “And who knows how many more chances we will have.”
At 88, Brubeck has seen a lot go on in the music industry while touring the world.
Matt Shinbur, a local resident, has been listening to Brubeck’s music for many years.
Shinbur explained that as a bass player for 13 years, he has studied many different artists and styles of music.
“Any true music fan can easily hear Brubeck’s talent,” Shinbur said. “He was the first jazz musician that caught my attention and is one of the only that I listen to. It is music that is different in a very interesting way.”
