City engineers have found soil and groundwater contamination near Yeager Road and Cumberland Avenue.
According to a press release, lab results showed elevated levels of the chemicals perchloroethene and trichloroethene in soil and groundwater near the site of an ongoing environmental clean-up at the former site of CTS Corporation at the 2900 block of Yeager Road.
The city took action by notifying the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, which will handle further testing and working out a solution. The city also contacted the county board of health and notified the residents of six homes across the street from the site about the contamination.
West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis said in a press release that city officials went door-to-door to notify residents in the area about the contamination. He said it is important that the contamination be taken care of quickly.
“When we received the results from our environmental consultant, we immediately contacted IDEM officials and asked them to act immediately. ... We expressed our deep concern that this newly-discovered contamination be dealt with quickly and completely,” Dennis said in the press release.
