Tonight Purdue will welcome a one-of-a-kind performance by an up-and-coming ballet group that is gaining fame throughout the world and their industry.

The Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet Company will perform tonight in Loeb Playhouse, and might bend the traditional stereotype of ballet.

“They should be different from the classic ballet like ‘Swan Lake’ or ‘The Nutcracker,’” said Abby Eddy, director of marketing for Purdue Convocations. “Contemporary ballet uses cutting edge movements and music to put a modern twist on classic ballet.”

Eddy said although they are a fairly new company, founded in 2003, Cedar Lake will be performing works from three legendary contemporary dance choreographers.

“This is a showcase of the works of these choreographers and is an usually an honor for a young company to perform,” she said.

Eddy said ticket sales for the ballet have been going well and around 80 percent of the seats available have been reserved.

“I have been dancing almost all of my life and did ballet when I was younger and it is still one of my favorite styles of dancing to watch,” said Ashley Harrington, a sophomore in the College of Liberal Arts. She said she has not seen a ballet since she was young, but since the opportunity came close to home it was something she did not want to miss.

“This is a great opportunity to see an up-and-coming ballet company. Typically, to see somebody like them you would have to go to New York,” agreed Eddy. “It is quite the opportunity to have an international ballet company touring to our part of the country.”
