Rarely does one see a serious musician wearing a bright purple sweatband on stage without a hint of irony. But when Future Rock drummer Darren Heitz decides to don one, it’s out of pure necessity.
The band’s Saturday night show at The Muse in downtown Lafayette was a sweaty dance party that raged into the early hours of the morning.
Future Rock was able to combine a live interpretation of electronica music with an instinct for improvisation. From their opening strains to the show’s closing cover of Daft Punk’s “Robot Rock,” the group demonstrated why fans from as far away as Chicago and Indianapolis made the trip to see the concert.
Josh Strahle, a Lafayette resident and fan, explained the attraction to the band.
“They’re so connected to the audience,” he said. “The interaction of the band with the crowd draws people to it.”
Bassist Felix Moreno could often be found standing on a speaker stack at the front of the stage, arms outstretched, and giving high fives to the enthusiastic crowd. Moreno professed his love for the crowd throughout the evening.
“There are so many people who went into putting this on, and we love every one of you,” he said. “We can’t wait to come back.”
The show also proved to be a true success for the young promotion company, Terrapin Entertainment. Co-founder Seth Ramser said they proved a lot about the Lafayette music scene as a whole, calling the show an “absolute success.”
“Everyone seemed so excited about what was going on. The turnout was amazing,” Ramser said. “I think we underestimated the crowd – we underestimated numbers, we underestimated energy, and we underestimated the Lafayette music scene in general.”
The event was a promising showing for Terrapin Entertainment, with local acts 6dollarsuit and Atarilogic providing impressive opening sets prior to Future Rock’s performance. Terrapin Entertainment will be hosting their next show Thursday at Riverside Bar, featuring electronica duo Two Fresh. As for the triumph of the Future Rock show, Ramser concluded it only means good things.
“I think this means we’ve just started.”
