The Cedar Lake Dance Company danced, writhed and screamed in front of a sold-out crowd Friday at Loeb Playhouse.
The performance was nothing like a stereotypical Nutcracker suite with tutus and pirouettes.
The dancing exhibited was incredibly physical, erratic and aggressive, yet remained beautifully fluid throughout the night.
A synchronized pantomime of a cracking whip from the company cued the music and unleashed solos from each of the dancers.
Tze Chiang, a doctoral student and member of several Purdue dance clubs, thoroughly enjoyed the performances.
“They are really great. ... Their technique is amazing,” he said.
Tiffany Lam, a junior in the college of Consumer and Family Sciences, was also impressed by the company’s performance.
“The girl on stilts was really cool. ... She did a great job!”
Along with stilts, the company used body paint, water, latex doors and creative lighting sources to concoct different moods and environments throughout the evening.
The dance company knew not only how to fill all of the seats in Loeb – they also knew how to empty them with a boisterous standing ovation.
