In response to the 15-yard penalty called on Purdue Pete at Saturday’s Michigan State game:
It’s troubling to me that in these uncertain times of wars, financial concerns, job losses, home foreclosures, etc., that to show team spirit and support is a punishable offense. The NCAA should concern themselves with true over-celebrating and the meaning of the term. Maybe violence, lewdness, injury occurring due to the celebrating and offensive behavior, can all be written into their handbook. That was not what happened Saturday. A mascot supports their own teammate by celebrating a touchdown with them – isn’t this why we go to the games? To celebrate the good? Purdue Pete was not taunting the other team or inciting bad behavior. It was a HUG! Come on, one thing needs to be irrefutable, and that is to be able to rejoice, smile and show support to others in a positive way, which is exactly what happened Saturday!
