A West Lafayette emergency room, a Trader Joe’s and a continuation of bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly initiatives were ideas put forward at the West Lafayette Strategic Plan Update on Thursday night.
The city of West Lafayette has hired Arnett Muldrow and Associates, a town planning firm, to lead an effort that will update its 2005 strategic plan for community development.
“The city decided it wanted some fresh eyes,” said Tripp Muldrow of Arnett Muldrow. “We’re here to check progress on the kind of work that’s been done in the past, evaluate directions, and do a refinement of strategies to look at the next three to five years as we move ahead.”
Muldrow said he was able to divide issues brought forward in previous meetings into five emerging themes: neighborhood vitality, community infrastructure, economic development, institutional development and community relations. The citizens at Thursday’s meeting were divided into corresponding groups and asked to report back with ideas.
“If you feel you need to push the envelope for the group you end up with, by all means push that envelope,” Muldrow instructed. “Make sure your issue is addressed.”
Patsy Hoyer, a family nurse practitioner at Clarian Arnett Hospital, was part of the group tasked with neighborhood vitality.
“It was really a great meeting,” Hoyer said. “We were able to come up with some really good, overarching ideas with some small, practical suggestions that we can start on now.”
Aaron Arnett of Arnett Muldrow pointed to a new Web site, www.westlafayetteplan.com, as the place to go for future information.
“There is still plenty of time for ongoing input,” Arnett said. “We are going to have three online meetings that will be publicized not only on that site, but we’ll get the word out however we can.”
The meetings are at 6 p.m. Dec. 7, 7 p.m. Dec. 13 and 10 a.m. Dec. 18.
